Damage Flooding from intense thunderstorms or from snowmelt
conditions can occur at any time of year especially in
the spring. This message will discuss those items relating
to flood damage. Damage from other natural disasters should
be forward to the appropriate entity. There are steps you
may take to minimize the flood damage before it occurs.
After a flood has occurred the following measures are suggested.
These should not be considered inclusive. Contact your
insurance agent to verify insurance coverage of the damages
you have incurred. Unless there are special circumstances
flooding from external sources is not covered on most homeowners
policies. Check for structural damage prior to entering
a building. Upon entering a building do not use an open
flame Verify utility lines are shut off {gas, electric}.
Do not enter folded areas unless all gas and electric lines
have been disconnected. Cover broken window or holes in
roof to prevent further damage. Commence immediate cleanup
activities to reduce health hazards. Use only purified
or bottled water Dry wooden furniture out of direct sunlight.
Remove debris before it has a chance to dry. Flooded basements
should be drained and cleaned after floodwaters have subsided.
Pumping out of basements should be done at moderate rates
to avoid wall failures. In the event that flooding is due
to a blocked storm drainage system please call the Street
Division at 685-2573 to get the blockage removed. After
hours call Manitou Police Dispatch at 685-5407.
